Pearls are natural, organic gems, and a little thoughtful care will help preserve their lustre for years to come. Their beauty comes from delicate layers of nacre, so they should be protected from chemicals, moisture, friction and hard knocks.
Everyday Care
Make your pearl jewelry the final touch when getting ready. Apply perfume, hairspray, make-up and skincare before putting your pearls on, and allow everything to dry first.
Avoid wearing your pearl jewelry while showering, swimming, exercising or sleeping. Water, perspiration, lotions and household chemicals can gradually affect both the pearls and their metal settings.
After each wear, gently wipe your jewelry with the Aware pearl cleaning cloth included with your order. This removes oils and residue before the piece is stored.
A simple rule to remember:
Last on, first off.
Caring for Baroque and Keshi Pearls
Baroque and Keshi pearls are loved for their organic shapes, natural ridges and individual surface character. No two are exactly alike, and these variations are part of what makes each Aware piece unique.
Because their surfaces and edges can be more irregular than round pearls, take extra care to prevent rubbing, snagging or pressure against hard objects. Do not try to polish away natural textures or surface variations.
Handle each piece gently and hold it by the metal setting or strand where possible, rather than pulling directly on the pearl.
Storage
Store pearl jewelry separately from harder gemstones, chains and sharp objects that may scratch the surface.
Before storing your jewelry:
-
Fasten clasps to help prevent tangling.
-
Lay necklaces and bracelets flat whenever possible.
-
Keep each piece in its own soft pouch or compartment.
-
Avoid direct sunlight, excessive heat and very dry or humid environments.
-
Do not leave pearls sealed in an airtight container for extended periods.
When travelling, place each piece in a protective jewelry pouch rather than carrying several pieces loosely together.
Pearls are made to be enjoyed, so wear them often and care for them gently.
Pearl Rings
Pearl rings are exposed to more knocks, water and everyday contact than necklaces or earrings.
Remove your ring before washing your hands, applying hand cream, cleaning, gardening, exercising or doing anything that may place pressure on the pearl or its setting.
Check the pearl and setting regularly, especially if the ring is worn frequently.
Maintenance
Before wearing your jewelry, occasionally check:
-
Necklace and bracelet clasps
-
Earring posts and backs
-
Pearl and gemstone settings
-
Jump rings and connecting pieces
-
Knotted or threaded strands
If a clasp feels loose, a setting moves, or a pearl strand begins to stretch or sit unevenly, stop wearing the piece and contact us. Restringing may be needed over time, particularly for pieces worn frequently.
Cleaning
For regular care, gently wipe your jewelry with a clean, soft pearl cloth after wearing it.
Never use:
-
Ultrasonic or steam cleaners
-
Silver dip or chemical jewelry cleaners
-
Abrasive polishing cloths
-
Toothpaste, baking soda or household cleaning products
-
Brushes or rough fabrics
Do not soak pearl jewelry in water. If your piece has stubborn residue, appears damaged or has lost some of its lustre, contact us before attempting a deeper clean.
